Photography Workshops London : Portraiture with Lou Smith
Another great day of portrait photography. The light was fantastic for this photography course – filtered light breaking through the clouds. Perfect! To create this soft illuminated light on Ghazaleh, we directed light from a reflector to create soft illumination. Ghazaleh is gorgeous in this shot – expressive eyes dominate the composition. Shallow aperture for portrait photography is recommended. This photograph of Ghazaleh was captured with an aperture value of F4. Be brave with compositions and fill the frame!
Add a 50mm prime lens to your kit bag and you can achieve shallow, shallow apertures of F1.4. To caputre great outdoor portraiture make your subject feel comfortable in the pose – Talk to your subject and let them know how great they look through your lens! Combine a fast shutter speed and shoot in continuious drive mode just in case your subject blinks. Don’t loose a perfect pose because of one eye closed! Shoot a few frames to ensure you capture the portrait perfectly, as seen through your camera. DSLRs and advanced compacts offer more control as to how the portrait will look. Selecting aperture manually and controlling exposure gives the portrait the look you want.

Occupy London Protesters at St Paul’s Cathedral

Occupy London Protesters outside St Paul's Cathedral
Tent City at St Paul’s Cathedral
Occupy London Protesters have set up camp outside St Paul’s Cathedral since October 15th 2011. The protesters are from the Occupy London Stock Exchange Organisation. Over 3,000 protesters gathered in the square outside the London Stock Exchange with the aim to occuppy it. London police stopped that from happening and the protesters have now set up camp outside St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Occupy London Camp outside St Paul's Cathedral busy with Activity
The demonstration is a protest about inequality and greed. The London Occupy Protest is an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street Movement. London demonstrators want the government to listen to people and not to bankers. Today, 15th November, breaking news is that the Wall Street Camp in New York has been cleared.

Signs and Slogans from the Occupy London Peace Camp
The camp has divided the authorities of St Paul’s. Dr Giles Fraser, the Head of St Paul’s resigned rather than take legal action to forcibly remove the London Protesters. Tent City looks as though it is here to stay until the authorities agree on how to handle the situation. Meanwhile Tent City has become part of London Life as this passer-by walks casually past the occupation.

FireWorks Display, London Photography
FireWorks – The Wonder of Light
Yes, it’s that time of year when all photographers turn their attention to the local fireworks display. Living in London, means endless opportunities to bag a few great shots at one of the many fireworks displays. With the words of old adds ringing in my ears, Light Up the Sky etc I made my way to the local firework display. This type of shot can be tricky if you do not understand exposure. Best to shoot in manual at 100 ISO. I set my lens to manual focus and set an aperture value of f11. Hang loose, and experiment with slow shutter speeds until you get the look you like. Here we go!

This shot is a crazy dance of light. Intricate light trails of colour flood the night sky! This is a symphony of light dancing in the sky. Forget about the cold, hang in there and enjoy the fireworks show! This photograph used a 4 second exposure f11, focusing manually for clarity of shot.

Warm, red colour floods the night sky. Stunning night photography and all for free! Great London FireWorks Displays paying homage to the safety of Parliament after the discovery of the failed Gun Powder Plot 1605. Parliament still stands and Guy Fawkes Night is an established tradition of celebration. Great for photographers to practice slow, slow night trails of colourful light.

If you didn’t get to a fireworks display on the 5th November – coming up next week, 12th November, is the Lord Mayor’s Fireworks Display. Another London event where you can capture great firework photography over the River Thames. Enjoy! See you soon…
