The Rose Garden in Summer

Walking In A Scented Garden with Lou Smith

The heady scent of Summer is here and the air is filled with rose scents and perfumes.  The Rose Garden looks just great and is an ideal setting for my Canon Macro Lens.  When I work with macro lenses I always use a tripod as it is difficult to hand hold very shallow depth of fields.  Even taking a breath on a shallow aperture of 2.8 could make the shot out of focus.

This year the Rose Garden is full of different varieties of roses, some are exceptionally perfumed and the experience of photographing for several hours is an intoxicating experience.  The grounds man talks to me and he laughs a lot – those rose scents have really got to him!

My favourite macro lens is the Canon 100mm.  The quality of prime lenses are razor sharp. It also gets in close for those extra special shots.  I always use the lens hood when photographing flowers as it protects the lens from pollen and dust. I also protect my lens with a UV filter.
